Shot in Morro Bay, this guy was hiding during broad daylight in a large tree above the harbor.  He has a beautiful red eye.

The black-crowned night heron is a stocky, medium-sized wading bird known for its striking appearance, especially its vivid red eyes. These piercing eyes stand out against its black crown and back, gray wings, and pale underparts. Primarily nocturnal, the heron uses its excellent night vision—enhanced by those red eyes—to hunt for fish, amphibians, and insects under the cover of darkness. Often seen perched motionless near water, it’s a stealthy and patient predator.
